Some 10-15 years ago Turkey was a central tourist hub for Israelis, with multiple flight everyday. It completely ceased because of the anti-israeli rethoric and a number of diplomatic incidents.

Up to a handful of yeara ago, a great number of good were imported from there, from cars to bottles water and many other products. It also stopped because the Turkish government cut economic ties for "ideological reasons".

So yes, they are definitely a threat, especially under Erdogan dreams of empire and sultanate with their very modern army. We went from lukewarm relations to what could almost be called cold war nowadays, especially with the Turkish attempt to control Syria.

This is saying nothing about morals. It just reflects on the interests of governments. Israel supported Azerbaijan militarily not because they align with them morally, but because Israel needs them for the easy access to Iran. China is pretty bad, but many countries wouldn't talk about it because they are too powerful and influential to mess with, and it's the same with Russia. On the other hand, other countries will avoid recognizing Taiwan so not to mess with China. Trump is using tariffs to influence what countries perceive as immoral war crimes and what's just "meh, it's just internal conflicts".

Where you stand morally has nothing to do with this discussion. However, plainly looking at interests, Turkey used to be Israel's bestie in the 90's but then decided to put their bets on dumping Israel and embracing the Palestinian cause to become more appealing to the Arab world. Palestine authority, or the people, support whoever supports them, and currently that's Turkey. I don't think the geopolitical situation in Cyprus is in their minds right now.

Israel, they are currently buying out Cyprus and honestly don't care about the Cyprus problem either. The wealthy people of Israel are buying property throughout the island, and most likely would prefer the Cypriot problem to not be resolved as it would put their properties in the north in question. 

Overall, Cyprus does not win from taking sides in this conflict. At least in regards to the Cypriot problem.

Either way, there is a precedent being set right now, that an occupation force can do what it wants in the occupied territories of Gaza &amp; West Bank and the EU and West (and Cyprus) more or less let them do it. So when the time comes for Turkey to make their final move, who will stand beside Cyprus?

Many people dk that Turkey actually had ties with Israel, and still does when you look at the trade deals, the fact that 4000 half Turkish Israelis went to fight the genocidal war in Gaza and the fact Israeli pilots are being trained in Konya - but you won’t hear this from state media.

FYI my father’s side is Turkish Cypriot, I’m born and raised in London, and mother is Turkish so before some Turk calls me a traitor or something do some research.

I think the reason these guys are making this narrative is:

1) Cyprus is a country geographically close to Israel, it makes sense to try make allies around you than enemies

2) I’m noticing this in Northern Cyprus and can only assume the same from the south, Israelis are buying property and land for development in stuff like hotels and so on.

One of the most demoralizing things about trying to learn about any complex issue, is watching how badly so many people will butcher it. Carve it into bite sized pieces that quickly fit whatever narrow world view they’ve established, on a steady diet of Instagram reels and TikTok’s. 

I understand that this is a heated issue, and people can make emotionally charged statements without thinking, but there are just so many comments these days that are so far past criticizing the Israeli government, and veer directly into genuine anti-semitism. All of which creates a positive feedback loop of reinforcing the idea in many Jewish people’s minds, that they are under attack, and need to support Israel unflinchingly.

History is complicated, learning it even more so. When you learn about history in school, it’s often presented as rote memorization of dates and people, concrete ideas with objective interpretations. But genuinely understanding the context that leads to conflicts, takes such an immense amount of time, it’s hard to expect that anyone outside of professional historians would even bother.

I wish I had a more positive outlook on the future of information and how people learn :(

Israel supported Hamas as an "enemy of my enemy" until they were attacked by Hamas *in 1989.* **Israel did not "install" Hamas as part of some 34-year supervillain scheme to commit future genocide**. October '23 was not a false flag.

Firstly - Restructuring the government of Gaza would not be a ceasefire, that would be a victory. If you're calling for restructuring governments to be a necessary condition in the ceasefire, then you're not for "Immediate Ceasefire"

Secondly what does the point about "75 years ago" mean. The conflict was just as genocidal then, the Nakba resulted in villages all across historic palestine being ethnically cleansed.

Very much agree with this post. I swear there is absolutely zero nuance in the I/P debate online. Even the number of people I see posting, without a ***hint*** of irony, something along the lines of:

The only takeaways from Israel/Palestine that matter for the overwhelming majority of people:

\-This war is a relatively small conflict between two populations that is not going to stop within your lifetime no matter what you do.

\-There are significantly larger, more heinous conflicts with less inertia if you want to care about world affairs.

\-If you are for some reason choosing to fixate on this one exclusively, you should probably think really carefully about why that is.

\-But really, anybody not actually living in the middle east almost certainly has bigger problems right at home that are much more deserving of their time and energy.

I want to be the annoying person to point out a very nasty sticking point here in all the israel gaza discussion: Gaza is inside israel’s borders, and this is over when the israeli people and government say it is. Everything else is pressure they can ignore. 

Geopolitically, israel is a heavily armed state with extensive domestic weapons production, a virtually unbreakable defensive posture, a massive well trained military, and second strike nuclear capability. Nobody can make them do anything they don’t want to do and everyone knows it. Right now, if trump told the military to end the war in Ukraine by killing putin and forcing the russians out, it would cost less american lives and resources than intervening in gaza. Our leaders will never truly piss them off because you absolutely do not make an enemy out of a nuclear armed ally like that.  

There’s nothing we in the US can do to really stop the genocide. Our protests can influence our government, which can pressure them. but until the israeli people want to stop this, nothing will happen.

Insane astroturf. Deleted account calling for nuance while the US and G7 fully back Israel, which tried to start a war against Iran over the weekend, has been livestreaming its soldiers killing Palestinians for months, is holding pro-rape protests and raping Gazans to death in detention camps, and through all this is widely supported by its population.

We are truly in hell: those are the same thoughtful, well-reasoned, nuanced takes that have been discussed over and over and over and over again on the left in the last 80 years. Great.    
Ultimately nothing will change because the genocide is extremely profitable. Doesn’t matter that the Israel head of state is a known criminal or that Hamas are murderers and insane or that Israel has long since been taken over by fundamentalist nationalist extremists.     
Nothing will change, because every baby pulverizing bomb is extremely profitable and that’s really all that matters.     
I’m sure the next 10 wars and genocides in the next 3 years will be just as profitable and horrifying.    
So all that nuance is surely going to safe the day.

I don’t think it’s a genocide at all—I think it’s a war, and I think calling it a genocide is a deliberate attempt to devalue the Holocaust.

And if you have a problem with this, I would suggest reaching out to your local Jewish community to learn why we feel this way.

And,finally. If you want to tell yourself that most Jews don’t feel the way I do, it should be a relatively simple effort to ask a few in your community if they think the word “genocide” is appropriate.
